- Zakuro-ishi (Almandine)
Makabe-cho, Ibaraki-ken, Japan
Zakuro-ishi (“Pometranate stone” in Japanese) has perfect trisoctahedron shape as if it is machine polished.
Dull-red color and its roundish shape really remind us of pomegranate pieces
Zakuro-ishi’s English name “garnet” derives from Latin word “Ganatus” which means “pomegranate-like”.
It is interesting that countries in the East and the West call the stone same way.
Commonly the mineral used for red jewelry is pyrope.
